Battle of the Publicists: NEST vs. Ross

In case you still haven't gotten sick of this one, the New York Times today lays out the race, class, and other issues involved in the exhausting battle between the elite and really, really white NEST+m public school and the Ross Global Charter School that has been assigned underused space inside the school next year.

Read the story to get all the juicy details about the battle - the contrasts are rather clear. Also note that students at NEST, who were asked to bombard the NY Times with letters criticizing Courtney Ross, the rich founder of the Ross school, are declaring that there will be "complete chaos" next year when those filthy, dirty charter school kids come into their cafeteria.

NEST parents were starting to complain that the cash they paid to their publicist to help them with PR in this battle was a rip-off, but this is pretty valuable real estate on the front of the Metro page. But the Ross people (Courtney Ross also has a publicist, the story notes) have got to be pleased that the Times chose to include photos. The pics make it very hard to argue that kids are crammed into NEST right now. Creative white space?

UPDATE: What do NEST and KIPP have in common? Read this Jay Mathews column in the Washington Post to find out. Also, on the flip side of that, Eduwonk notes why this case shows NYC Chancellor Joel Klein is counterintuitive.
