Cash for NYSUT Members!

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer comes through for the little guys even when their union doesn't. As a result of this mess, tens of thousands of public school teachers in New York State will get checks for at least $100. (The settlement doesn't include United Federation of Teachers members in NYC, because it didn't allow its members to be ripped off by NYSUT like the rest of the state.)

In June, NYSUT agreed to pay $100,000 to settle charges from Spitzer's office. All told, NYSUT's partner, the Dutch investment company ING, now will pay out an additional $30 million directly to NYSUT rank-and-filers.

Spitzer says he wants the settlement to serve as a precedent to make sure employees nationwide aren't NYSUT'ed into parking their hard-earned money in bad investments.

Since we do live in a democracy, wouldn't it be funny if the ING checks arrived in teachers' mailboxes on Nov. 6?
