Klein's Charter Push
NYC Chancellor Joel Klein makes his case for lifting the cap on charter schools in the New York Post. He links the chartering philosophy with the current effort to decentralize successful schools in the city's public schools:Charter schools foster the culture of success that the mayor and I are working to promote in all of our schools. Charter leaders are willing to be held accountable for their results. They are empowered to make smart decisions. They set high standards, and they tailor instruction to meet the needs of individual students.
The same attitude motivated more than 300 New York City principals to turn their schools into Empowerment Schools this year. They agreed to be held accountable for academic progress in exchange for gaining additional discretion over their school budgets, programs and personnel.
Our kids benefit when educators take responsibility for results instead of making excuses for years of persistent failure - when they put children's needs of ahead of their own.
Lifting the charter cap is one easy way for us to take responsibility for the education of our students. New York City kids deserve nothing less.
