Gavin: Problem Isn't Kids, It's Schools

The New York City Center for Charter School Excellence's Paula Gavin was profiled in the Daily News over the weekend by Clem Richardson. Gavin is optimistic about the future of charter schools, especially as a tool for closing the achievement gap between the haves and the have-nots. Says Gavin:

"Every child deserves a great education, and every child has the ability to succeed," she said. "Every single child can learn. It has become increasingly disturbing that there is an achievement gap where children are not given the tools they need to succeed in school and their lives and potential are curtailed.

"The problem with education is not the children, it's the schools," she said. "If schools don't have high expectations, if they don't put rigorous academics in place, the children don't perform."
