D'Amato And NYSUT

The state teachers union has reached for the nuclear option to keep a lid on any talk about including a tuition tax credit in this year's pending state budget: they brought up the D-word. As in D'Amato. As in Alphonse D'Amato.

Capital Confidential reports that NYSUT is calling its all-out-war on the tax credits the union's biggest campaign since 1998 when they picked off Sen. Pothole over his "fatal mistake" to criticize teacher tenure laws. (Chuck Schumer then stepped over D'Amato's political carcass and hasn't stopped holding Sunday press conferences ever since...) The union has a special section on its website on the Voucher Threat highlighting its current battle.

Meanwhile, over at the UFT's blog, EdWize, Leo Casey is continuing to argue that if the cap on charter schools is not lifted this year, it isn't the union's fault but rather the fault of NYC Chancellor Joel Klein. You paying attention Charter Chuck?
