Bloomfield On Small Schools/Philanthropy
Brooklyn College prof David Bloomfield, who used to be the top lawyer for the New York City Board of Education, writes a hard-hitting guest op-ed piece this week on InsideSchools. Specifically he looks at the role that foundations have played in influencing the small schools movement and what responsibility they have to follow-up and report on the impact of the public policies they have pushed through. Read his essay here.
Rick Hess takes up the role on philanthropy in education in this new book, and my book on education politics also has an entire chapter on the ways foundations supersede the democratic process and what the public needs to do to assure real accountability for what they are pushing.
